Il contributo intende ripercorrere, attraverso l’esame di una serie di documenti inediti relativi all’arco temporale che va dal primo quarto dell’ottocento al 1860, alcuni dei momenti più signi cativi legati all’introduzione nella sicilia borbonica del sistema di mutuo insegnamento, elaborato in Inghilterra sul nire del secolo XVIII da Joseph lancaster, ed alla graduale diffusione nell’isola, in controtendenza con quanto avvenne nei domini continentali del regno delle Due sicilie, delle scuole lancastriane per i fanciulli e le fanciulle. By means of examining a series of unpublished documents covering a period which ranges from the rst quarter of the XIXth century to 1860, this paper aims at retracing some of the most signi cant moments in the introduction of the mutual teaching method in Sicily during the Borbonic domination. Designed in England by Joseph Lancaster at the end of the XVIIIth century, this method gradually opened the way to the diffusion of Lancasterian schools for boys and girls on the island, as opposed to what happened in the continental territories of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
