In 1809 the King of Naples Joaquin Murat established a commission to reform public education. The chairman of the commission Vincenzo Cuoco, a few months after his appointment, handed in to the state council an incredibly progressive project for the times, though deeply different from the education system of napoleonic france. Vico’s lesson, which Francesco Mario Pagano learned in his younger years, was the theoretical assumption on which Cuoco based his own project for a uniform universal public education system. in this light, Vincenzo Cuoco’s conception can be defined as a “pedagogy of the real”, which finds in the education of the people/lower classes the way to the educational and social development of the kingdom.
