If the range of knowledge found in Bouvard et Pécuchet is encyclopaedic and, at the same time, consistently with Flaubert’s intentions, critical and harshly comical, the representation of the most common aspects of everyday life is neither less vast nor less grotesque. It is not surprising that wine, the most widespread drink of every time, appears in several episodes of the novel; more than once, the author uses this trope to construct and reinforce the isotopy of failure and of bêtise that circulates across the whole text. Comparing the published text with the manuscripts, with particular attention devoted to the onomasiological choices of the author, this paper analyses some of the most significant episodes that contribute to the textualisation of two foundational themes of the novel, i.e. the theme of failure and the critical reassessment of scientific theories of the XIX century.

Abstract
If the range of knowledge found in Bouvard et Pécuchet is encyclopaedic and, at the same time, consistently with Flaubert’s intentions, critical and harshly comical, the representation of the most common aspects of everyday life is neither less vast nor less grotesque. It is not surprising that wine, the most widespread drink of every time, appears in several episodes of the novel; more than once, the author uses this trope to construct and reinforce the isotopy of failure and of bêtise that circulates across the whole text. Comparing the published text with the manuscripts, with particular attention devoted to the onomasiological choices of the author, this paper analyses some of the most significant episodes that contribute to the textualisation of two foundational themes of the novel, i.e. the theme of failure and the critical reassessment of scientific theories of the XIX century.Pubblicazioni consigliate
