A bottom sample from the harbour of Saline Joniche (Reggio Calabria) yielded two shells belonging to the genus Marginella. Both shells are markedly small (ca 3 mm in height) and fairly well preserved. They do not seem to belong to any known species. In the view of the recently documented occurrence of Marginella in Early Pleistocene deposits of the Messina Strait area, the two shells are tentatively considered as reworked fossils from Pleistocene or older sediments.

Abstract

A bottom sample from the harbour of Saline Joniche (Reggio Calabria) yielded two shells belonging to the genus Marginella. Both shells are markedly small (ca 3 mm in height) and fairly well preserved. They do not seem to belong to any known species. In the view of the recently documented occurrence of Marginella in Early Pleistocene deposits of the Messina Strait area, the two shells are tentatively considered as reworked fossils from Pleistocene or older sediments.
