The recent essay by Antonino Pennisi and Alessandra Falzone, entitled Darwinian Biolinguistics. Theory and History of a Naturalistic Philosophy of Language and Pragmatics, Springer, 2016, is the theoretical synthesis of a long series of research projects on language sciences conducted by the authors at the Department of Cognitive Science, University of Messina (Italy). The book presents a very rich and well-documented survey of scientific positions on the origin, development and functioning of language. What holds together the different theoretical approaches to the complex universe of linguistic processes is the idea of the authors – now rooted in many years of research – an indispensable naturalistic explanation.
