American democratic pluralism, admired but also criticized by Robert A. Dahl, has always been the object of his scientific speculation, starting with the system of the federal American republic founded on the Constitution of 1787. In his main works, Dahl clearly opposes American Madisonian democracy to the populist model of Rousseau coming to a third democratic model that himself, as known, defines polyarchy, a modern representative democracy with universal suffrage, which develops in the twentieth century.
