The Jeffersonian Republicans believed that social cohesion came from moral character of the people who lived in an agrarian community. For this reason, it became essential to preserve the rural republicanism in America as the only form of government able to guarantee the values of a truly democratic society. It was necessary to help the owners to maintain and improve the land, in order to keep their independence in the political arena.

Abstract
