In this paper, it is discussed Plato’s notions of play in the Laws, in which the concepts of paidia (play), and spoude (often translated as "seriousness'') are explicit, with the aim of not tracking simple contrast between what we consider play and what we consider serious. The idea is the notion of play requires an extension of the idea of mere child’s play. It is in this sense Plato’s attitude toward play he comes to our aid. Inclined to no consider play an activity only for children, asserts that play could provide always a stimulus to understanding.

Abstract: | In this paper, it is discussed Plato’s notions of play in the Laws, in which the concepts of paidia (play), and spoude (often translated as "seriousness'') are explicit, with the aim of not tracking simple contrast between what we consider play and what we consider serious. The idea is the notion of play requires an extension of the idea of mere child’s play. It is in this sense Plato’s attitude toward play he comes to our aid. Inclined to no consider play an activity only for children, asserts that play could provide always a stimulus to understanding. |
