Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe intestinal inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Plain abdominal radiography is the current standard imaging modality for evaluation of neonates with NEC. With the goal of standardizing radiographic reporting, Coursey et all proposed a 10-point scale. Sonography can provide important information such as the visualization in real time of the bowel wall , assessing bowel wall thickness, echogenicity, peristalsis and perfusion of the bowel wall.
