Lovesick princes. The exemplum of Antiochus Soter in ancient medical literature · This paper examines the discussion in ancient medical sources of the lovesickness of Antiochus I Soter for his stepmother Stratonice. It aims to investigate on the one hand the function and the manner of treatment of this topic, on the other hand the contribution of medical writers to the conceptualization of lovesickness within the ancient medical debate. The focus is on passages from Galen, Stephanus/Theophilus, and Stephanus of Athens. By way of conclusion, the relevance to this story of a passage from Aretaeus is also considered. This deals with a clinical case of lovesickness similar to that of Antiochus, the interpretation of which has often been affected by this similarity.
