This article attempts to lay the preliminary methodological foundations for a series of systematic surveys on the performativity of Dante’s poetry within two general areas: the first, which we define “Performativity of the Comedy”, concerns the analysis of semantic, rhetorical, phonic, prosodic, musical, and narratological elements in order to understand if the sacred Poem responds to a finalité performancielle. The second, which we call “Performativity in the Comedy”, concerns the search for elements attributable to the broad spectrum of performing in the Middle Ages and, in particular, for appreciable traces of the categories of spectacularity and theatricality. In this regard, the methodological filter of Performance Studies will be applied to the study of Dante’s poem.
