The new Italian translation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings by Ottavio Fatica – which abruptly replaces the classical version of Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca – has given rise to a heated debate. This essay deals with the question in terms of both literary theory and performativity in order to highlight how and to what extent a translation can return the Author’s will and vision of the world and, moreover, how the translation, considered “as performance”, fits into the culture of its time, interacts with it and becomes part of the collective memory of a community.

Abstract

The new Italian translation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings by Ottavio Fatica – which abruptly replaces the classical version of Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca – has given rise to a heated debate. This essay deals with the question in terms of both literary theory and performativity in order to highlight how and to what extent a translation can return the Author’s will and vision of the world and, moreover, how the translation, considered “as performance”, fits into the culture of its time, interacts with it and becomes part of the collective memory of a community.
