The Histories by Agathias contain a passage about Nonnus of Panopolis’ Dionysiaca whose meaning is still disputed. The Author of the present contribution starts by describing the different interpretations of the text provided by modern interpreters; he then points to the correct interpretation and draws some conclusions regarding the circulation of Nonnus’ verses in the late 5th and 6th century.
