Stefano D’Arrigo’s Horcynus Orca does not just recount the vicissitudes of returning home from war, but is a journey to the indistinct roots of life where the animal looks unspeakably at man and man looks at the animal trying to name it, to dominate it by the words, to classify it in a sacred book. D’Arrigo’s desecrating book aims to explore the caesura between man and animal using a deformed language that has given up the privilege of ordering and hierarchizing life. Considering also some early stories on animality (Il mio amico lupomannaro, La coda di Edoardo, 5 appunti sul mio cane), the essay intends to examine the relationship between man, animal and language in Horcynus Orca as a problematic space to investigate the dimension of war and the violence of human history in a «journey of knowledge» on the limit of being and death.
