The study of the production and consumption processes of brick in the medieval and post-medieval periods highlights the central role played by this building material in Siena’s urban development. The introduction of bricks in urban constructions dates to the second half and the end of the 12th century. Their use expanded in the 13th century, until they became dominant at the start of the 14th century. Metrological analyses carried out on bricks used in buildings between the end of the 12th and the early 19th century have enabled a mensiochronological curve of the city to be verified and implemented. In the framework of an analysis of the dynamics of the variations and their meaning, research has also revealed a link between the increase in the size of bricks in Siena and the increase in building activity, especially in the decades between the mid-13th century and the 1330s.

Abstract
The study of the production and consumption processes of brick in the medieval and post-medieval periods highlights the central role played by this building material in Siena’s urban development. The introduction of bricks in urban constructions dates to the second half and the end of the 12th century. Their use expanded in the 13th century, until they became dominant at the start of the 14th century. Metrological analyses carried out on bricks used in buildings between the end of the 12th and the early 19th century have enabled a mensiochronological curve of the city to be verified and implemented. In the framework of an analysis of the dynamics of the variations and their meaning, research has also revealed a link between the increase in the size of bricks in Siena and the increase in building activity, especially in the decades between the mid-13th century and the 1330s.Pubblicazioni consigliate
