The article examines the marble «custodia» (reliquary) created by the sculptor Domenico Gagini to contain the remains of the blessed Gandolfo da Binasco, a Franciscan friar who had died in Polizzi Generosa in 1260. Gagini's work commissioned in 1482 is analysed in comparison to the tradition of medieval tombs of saints, and from an iconographic point of view, highlighting the constructional peculiarities and the markedly civic themes of the reliefs that decorate it.

Abstract

The article examines the marble «custodia» (reliquary) created by the sculptor Domenico Gagini to contain the remains of the blessed Gandolfo da Binasco, a Franciscan friar who had died in Polizzi Generosa in 1260.
