This article describes Virginia Woolf's attempt to distance herself from Thomas Carlyle, known as the "the sage of Chelsea", whose biographies and essays contain no trace of uncertainty in their interpretation of great historical figures. Carlyle chose the biographical method as the best way of interpreting history. Virginia Woolf was connected with Carlyle by his father. Leslie Stephen's admiration for Carlyle was huge. And Thomas Carlyle was the keystone in Wool'f's relationship with her father. Woolf’s essay Carlyle’s House can surely only be read as a tribute to both Carlyle and her father.
