The article provides a series of arguments, illustrated by examples, in favour of a new reconstruction of the opening sentence of the Shepherd of Hermas. In particular, I argue that the authentic beginning of the work presented a girl, a κόρη, sold as a slave in Rome. Various philological considerations and several literary parallels support this reconstruction.
