The first Athens coin series, conventionally called Wappenmünzen or blazon-coins, have been the subject of various and contrasting hypotheses by scholars. Using all available sources, it is perhaps possible today to formulate a new theory that can propose an acceptable chronology and provide a scientific explanation of the choice to use many coin devices. In Aegina and Corinth, at the same time, to allow the recognizability of their coins, the choice was different: a single coin type, immutable in time.
