Is it possible to suppose a sort of ante litteram Mediterranean francophonie between the 11th and 19th centuries? This diachronic overview, based on documents and studies, reveals how the French played a leading role also in linguistic and cultural terms, from the establishment of the Normands in Sicily to the conquest of Algerie, through a series of historical events, political and diplomatic issues.
