The present essay provides a detailed critical analysis of Gregory Hanlon’s recent book, Death Control in the West 1500-1800 (Routledge, 2023). In particular, this paper focuses on the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza during the early modern age. In this State, in tune with European demographic trends, parents used to control births through selective infanticide. This practice is shown in the alternative preference either for male or female offsprings, based on various factors closely related to the productive activities of the territory.
