The paper reconstructs the history of a Pascoli’s anthological collection of verse translations by ancient Greek and Latin authors (Simonides, Sophocles, Virgil, Melinnus, Rutilius Namatianus, etc.). The collection, entitled Patria, was considered by its first editor to be the work of the last Pascoli (1910-1911), when the poet was already the wellknown ‘vate’ of the nation. Thanks to an in-depth study of the texts and new documentary and critical acquisitions, the collection turns out to be a highly experimental artistic exercise carried out for the sixth anniversary of the death of King Vittorio Emanuele II (January 9, 1884). The study offers a new critical text of the translations with an extensive commentary that aims to highlight the cultural implications of the young poet’s selection and translation choices.
