Sicily was the subject of many French travel stories. It aroused the interest of travelers for its testimonies of classical antiquity but also for its landscapes and colors. This article aims to study the way in which French travelers represent natural and human landscapes by the use of chromonyms. The analysis, using grammar, stylistic values and textual sequences, is based on an inventory of color adjectives and chromonymic expressions. They can give a suggestive image of the island, or reproduce a scientific representation. If topoi participate in the construction of the picturesque, we will see that beyond the immediate stylistic impact, certain expressions could be inserted between "artist writing" and “impressionist effect writing”.

Abstract
Sicily was the subject of many French travel stories. It aroused the interest of travelers for its testimonies of classical antiquity but also for its landscapes and colors. This article aims to study the way in which French travelers represent natural and human landscapes by the use of chromonyms. The analysis, using grammar, stylistic values and textual sequences, is based on an inventory of color adjectives and chromonymic expressions. They can give a suggestive image of the island, or reproduce a scientific representation. If topoi participate in the construction of the picturesque, we will see that beyond the immediate stylistic impact, certain expressions could be inserted between "artist writing" and “impressionist effect writing”.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
