The aim of this article is to examine the demographic evolution of Messina from the early modern period to the advent of the twentieth century, with a particular focus on the 125-year interval between the two catastrophic earthquakes that significantly impacted the city. The research made use of the statistical information derived from the registers of the parishes of San Giuliano and San Nicolò all’Arcivescovado, as well as the general data from the Sicilian “Riveli” and the post-unification censuses. The objective was to present a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the interconnections between natural disasters and the socioeconomic development of Messina.
