Drawing on the advisory opinion of 21 May 2024, this essay addresses, firstly, the legal basis of the advisory jurisdiction of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and, secondly, the relevance that the Tribunal attaches to systemic integration for the interpretation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and, more generally, of the «legal order for the seas and the oceans». Relevance, which is particularly evident in the case of climate change obligations derived from both the Convention and external international agreements.
