A passage in book IX of Pollux’s Onomasticon preserves a Hesiodic quotation printed by Bethe in his edition of Pollux (vol. II, 1931). The quotation regards the word πορθμός (“sea-strait”). The name of Hesiod, together with a reference to Eur. Hec. 1100-1106, appears only in the Laur. plut. 56.1 (twelfth century). This ms. was first collated by Maass in 1880 and later exploited by Bethe for his edition. However, the passage is not included in any edition of Hesiodic fragments, probably because no editor after Rzach (1913) checked Bethe’s text properly. There are a few instances where Hesiod speaks of sea-straits (Op. 650-662 and fr. 150 M.-W.), as well as paraphrase quotations of Hesiod mentioning sea-straits (frr. 149 and 188A M.-W), but it is impossible to identify with any certainty a work in which Hesiod could have used the word πορθμός.
