Abstract

The pandemic highlighted the geopolitical dilemmas on the international stage prior to the global spread of the coronavirus. The health emergency revealed the long-standing difficulties faced by the world's main immigration destinations in assisting and accommodating asylum seekers. From the Mediterranean border to the Mexican border, the geopolitical dilemma of guaranteeing both the right to asylum and the right to health of refugees and indigenous populations residing in the territories close to the places of identification and reception has emerged more strongly. The aim of this article is to analyse from a geopolitical perspective the present and future scenarios of the international system of reception of asylum seekers in the pandemic era and in the new postpandemic normality.
