The 70th anniversary of Norberto Bobbio’s "Politica e cultura" (1955) provides an occasion for this paper to offer some reflections on the unpublished correspondence between Norberto Bobbio and Carlo Antoni. This epistolary exchange indeed anticipates several themes developed in that book (e.g., the relationship between freedom and tyranny within the Soviet regime). The most significant portion of the correspondence, spanning from 1951 to 1954, also illuminates Bobbio’s and Antoni’s differing stances on communism. This contrast may have contributed to their eventual estrangement, seemingly triggered by Bobbio’s benevolent assessment of Pietro Rossi. This paper, therefore, aims to hypothetically reconstruct the fragments of a significant debate in the history of post-Second World War Italy.
