We describe two patients affected by recurring epileptic seizures and mental retardation, with high levels of plasmatic and urinary proline. Recent findings suggest that proline, at high concentrations (> 100 μM), regulates the basal function of some glutamate synapses by maintaining them in a partially potentiated state. Thus, the recurrence of seizures in the developmental age could be due to the hyperstimulation of glutamate by proline.

Abstract

We describe two patients affected by recurring epileptic seizures and mental retardation, with high levels of plasmatic and urinary proline. Recent findings suggest that proline, at high concentrations (> 100 μM), regulates the basal function of some glutamate synapses by maintaining them in a partially potentiated state. Thus, the recurrence of seizures in the developmental age could be due to the hyperstimulation of glutamate by proline.
