The present contribution is focused on the main advances made in the field of heart-cutting multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC), over approximately the last decade. Brief details on the history of classical MDGC are also given. A series of applications, carried out with modern-day commercially available instrumentation are shown, demonstrating the usefulness of the bidimensional methodology in specific analytical situations. Finally, the future prospects of MDGC are considered, within the shadow projected by a very powerful GC technique, namely comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract
