Abstract

Many aspects of the work of the judges of the faith have been studied by scholars, but the attention to the role played by the orality in the repression of the religious dissent is still little investigated. After a brief analysis of the evolution of the inquisitorial law in matter of the so-called “heretical propositions”, the essay aims to analyse how the inquisitors effectively faced the verbal crimes in trials held in an important area as that under the jurisdiction of the Sienese court between 16th and 17th century.
