The present essay analyses Clement Scott’s collection of poems Lays of a Londoner in its context, with particular reference to the poetry and drama of Scott’s former collaborator W. S. Gilbert, in order to show how the theatre critic’s quest for the ideal within the sordidness of reality had been his paramount concern well before he got involved in the controversy over Ibsen’s plays
